Autumn in my hair: DIY Pumpkin hair mask

Although we often choose professional store-bought hair masks (which is good because they target particular hair problems), we sometimes feel like creating a customized home hair booster. Today we’ll show you how to combine DIY hair care products with the lovely autumn vibes. Let us present you the pumpkin hair mask recipe that you’ll love!

The best thing about home hair treatments is the fact that you can expose your strands to the substances you have close at hand (in most cases the things you store in your kitchen cupboards). So, if your hair seems to be too dry and lacks nourishment, give this pumpkin hair mask a go! This is a real vitamin bomb that prepares the hair for the upcoming winter. With it, your strands will be stronger and prettier.

Benefits of pumpkin for the hair

Not everyone is a pumpkin enthusiast because unless seasoned well, it rather tastes bland. Everyone knows that this orange vegetable hides plenty of precious nutrients. If not for cooking, it’s worth making use of the very nourishing substances and implementing them into some hair and skin treatments.

Pumpkin flesh is a rich source of antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. They are known for being able to combat free radicals which means that they delay ageing of skin and hair. Additionally, vitamin C has a reviving effect and vitamin E improves resilience of the hair and visibly reduces wrinkles. Pumpkin also contains squalene that is known for strengthening hair and skin. It also protects from freezing weather and strong wind. Actually, there is another reason why hair loves pumpkin, and it’s the minerals – zinc in particular – that the pumpkin flesh houses. This chemical element maintains a balance of natural oils on the skin, so hair stops getting greasy too fast. Also the risk of some skin ailments such as seborrhoeic dermatitis is significantly reduced.

Home DIY pumpkin hair mask

Having an excess pumpkin and knowing all the benefits this vegetable has in store for hair, it’s worth trying some home DIY pumpkin hair mask – it’s super easy to prepare (see below)! Oh, and the best bit is that this homemade hair mask is suitable for all hair types. This do-it-all hair product is especially beneficial for the hair that has been damaged due to the summer (scorching sun, salty water, etc.).

NOTE! Pumpkin hair mask doesn’t change the hair color! This is a widely held myth that should be debunked.

DIY Pumpkin Hair Mask Recipe

You will need:

  • 2 tbsp. pumpkin purée
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. natural yogurt
  • 1 tsp. honey

Step-by-step: Pumpkin Hair Mask

  1. First you need to prepare the pumpkin. Leave the peeled and cut into smaller pumpkin pieces to stew for about 30 minutes. Put on a lid and wait until the pumping pieces get softer. Remember to stir your hair-mask-to-be from time to time to prevent it from burning. Once soft, blend it and let it cool down.
  2. Now mix the pumpkin purée with the remaining ingredients. If your hair is dry and dehydrated, you can add a little more yogurt or honey – both ingredients are responsible for boosting hydration in the hair. Coconut oil can be replaced with any oil that suits your hair better. You will know that the hair mask is ready when it has an intensive orange color and its texture is creamy.
  3. Your homemade pumpkin hair mask works best when applied to washed hair and clean scalp. Try distributing it thoroughly along the hair, and then put on a foil and a warm towel. After 15-20 minutes rinse thoroughly with warm water.
